Today we are going to drive up to the top of Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula to visit L’Anse aux Meadows Viking Village. We’re looking forward to it because most of the drive is right along the sea.
We started our day in Port Saunders, after another great night by the sea. We had a bit of company at this spot. We met a couple from Austria who flew straight to Newfoundland and rented a car to explore this beautiful province.
Another lighthouse was close-by, so of course we had to go visit it. Point Riche Lighthouse is an active lighthouse, built on flat rock. It was beautiful!
We found a nice little rest stop as we drove up the Viking Trail. It was a good place to stop and cook our breakfast and enjoy the amazing view.
We arrived at the Viking Village around 10:00 am. It was COLD! We searched through all our belongings for all our warmest clothes, and set off to explore. It was the first time we ever saw snow in July! We joined a guided tour with a very friendly and knowledgable guide. We learned that vikings from Greenland were actually the first known presence in the Americas. Dressed up actors were all around the site, giving us glimpses of what it was like living in this village all those years ago. We highly recommend taking the extra time to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site. And we strongly recommend warm clothing so the you can comfortably explore the site.
